<p>As a counselor for both in class and online alcohol awareness courses I hear my students talk about their new affinity for combining alcohol with an energy drink such as Red Bull. A recovering alcoholic who has been sober since before Red Bull and the energy drink craze, I sought to understand why this mixture has become so popular.</p>
<p>If You Swallow This, You&#8217;ll Swallow Anything</p>
<p>Quick &#8211; what do you call a beverage that combines alcohol with other ingredients? If you answered cocktail &#8211; you are correct. The earliest traces of cocktails come from about 1800 when people combined any type of spirit with bitters, sugar or water.</p>
<p>The big joke surrounding the consumption of cocktails in the early 1800s was that they were powerful tools for political candidates with notion that if you would swallow a cocktail, you would swallow anything. Maybe that&#8217;s why I feel so disenchanted with the current political situation (I&#8217;m not swallowing anything).</p>
<p>To Mix or Not To Mix &#8211; That is the Question</p>
<p>There is little doubt that today, in 2011, energy drinks are all the rage, them and vitamin-enhanced water. Call me a hypocrite, but I just don&#8217;t get it either one of them. I take a multi-vitamin every day and have no problem drinking ordinary tap water. I feel fortunate to live in a civilized society that provides almost free healthy drinking water. While I don&#8217;t drink energy drinks I do drink caffeinated coffee each morning (and occasionally after dinner).</p>
<p>Other than a dash of Bailey&#8217;s Irish Cream in a cup of coffee and had never combined alcohol with an energy-boosting alcoholic beverage. But combining the depressant &#8211; alcohol, with the stimulant &#8211; energy drink, is the latest craze in alcoholic drinks.</p>
<p>I am sure these drinks are tasty, but are they safe?</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t Get Gored by the Big Red Bull!</p>
<p>For many drinking either an alcoholic beverage or energy drink is safe. Drinking too many of either has proven to be not just unhealthy, but seriously hazardous to your health. Students of my alcohol awareness classes learn this in the first few hours.</p>
<p>Now France has many interesting culinary habits like eating escargot. You can also buy horse meat in the local butcher shop. One thing you can&#8217;t buy in France &#8211; Red Bull! I know what you&#8217;re thinking &#8211; you want to know why on Earth they would ban such a seemingly innocuous beverage, right?</p>
<p>Red Bull was banned after a number of serious health incidents in which Red Bull was consumed and capped off by the death of an 18-year-old athlete who died shortly after playing basketball and drinking four cans.</p>
<p>Bad Side Effects of Energy Drinks</p>
<p>Research has shown that there are more than just the energy-enhancing effects of these energy drinks, both physical and mental. In some individuals the effects are positive, increasing alertness and improving cognitive performance. However, f too many energy drinks are consumed one might experience a &#8220;high&#8221; from over-stimulation, but more importantly have serious common side effects like increasing agitation, anxiety and insomnia.</p>
<p>Energy drinks are also known to cause nausea, irregular heart beat and even seizures.</p>
<p>Mixing Could be Hazardous to Your Health!</p>
<p>Mixing caffeinated beverages with alcohol is nothing new. Cuba Libra is a good example. However, Red Bull and other &#8220;modern-day&#8221; energy drinks have three times the caffeine than cola.</p>
<p>One of the effects of alcohol is to alter your brain&#8217;s ability to make rational decisions. It is a fact &#8211; alcohol slows the minds ability to function and decreases reaction time. A recent study showed that mixing alcohol with a highly-caffeinated energy drink gave those consuming the toxic mixture a sense that they were more in control. This side effect could enable drinkers of these beverages to take more risks than had they just consumed alcohol alone.</p>
